The audiovisual approach in translation
As we know there wasn’t a great need for film translation before
but it has increased in last two decades. lots of films are being dubbed these
Based on The Rutledge encyclopedia of translation there are 4 groups
of countries based on the type of movie translation they do first group is
source- language countries like United States which movies are hardly imported
and most of the times they don’t use dubbing for them.
second one is dubbing
countries like France, German and Spain, the majority of their movies are
third one subtitling countries which have a large amount of
imported films so they prefer subtitling to dubbing.
the last group is voiceover countries which can’t afford dubbing .
audio visual translation is what translator do with the movie
before it is dubbed or subtitled.it is an old method which works on
communication and focuses on listening and speaking more than other skills.
this is study wants to find out if the audio visual approach is
useful in translator training or not and also it wants to find out about its effectiveness in
teaching interpretation .
the method of research is descriptive and participants are 55
students of English major. First their perception of audio visual translation
was measured in questionnaires .The type of activity used in the research is
documentary movie and the level was B1. The aim is to foster a speaking and
listening skills and to introduce students to communicative use of translation.
there are four steps done:
the teacher played the movie in 2 languages then student took turn to interpret
what is said in the other language and meanwhile the teacher corrected their
mistakes and gave them supportive feedbacks.
after that again he questioned them about their perspective of audio
visual translation approach and the results showed that their idea had changed
and they had found this method very useful and also their scores of translation
were improved. before using approach the average is score was 41.5% and after
that it was 58 % .
based on this research we find out that using this method in
learning translation is effective so translation can use the aid of some of the
teaching approaches in translation.
( I think it’s a good idea to use movies for teaching
interpretation because it helps translators a lot in understanding the
communicative language in the society.)
