The American Dream: Dead, Alive or on Hold,”

The American Dream is the one of the
main reasons why immigrants come to the United States, it is the reason why
many work hard to achieve this dream. The American Dream is the vision of a big
house with the white picket fence, a stable job and a family. After 239 years
of the United States being a country, the American Dream still exists. Brandon
King, the author of “The American Dream: Dead, Alive or on Hold,” and Shayan
Zadeh, the author of “Bring More Immigrant Entrepreneurs,” both write about the
American Dream and how it is still relevant in today’s society. The American
Dream is still one of the main reasons of why immigrants come to the United
States, it gives people hope knowing that if they work hard enough, they can
achieve anything; King and Zadeh both write on how the American dream can still
be achieved even if The American Dream has been redefined over the years.

The
American Dream has been altered and has changed over the years according to
what the people of the United States need. King quoted, in his essay “The American Dream: Dead, Alive or
on Hold,” the author James
Truslow Adams who wrote, that the American Dream was the “dream of a land in
which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with
opportunity for each according to ability and achievement, regardless of social
class or circumstances of birth” and King redefines the American Dream by
stating that  it is “the potential to
work for an honest, secure way of life and save for the future” (King
610).  King also states that “in many
ways, the American Dream of today is a trimmed down version of its former self”
and he says this because in recent surveys people have been saying that being
“successful” is hanging onto a steady job, being able to have a financially
secured future such as being able to retire without worrying about money and
lastly having a stable place to live in (King 612). There is no longer the need
to have an extravagant house or the nicest sport car there is; people are now
comfortable living with what they need. The American Dream in the 21st century
is the smaller version of the American Dream from what it was in the 20th
century. King says that in today’s society people no longer strive for “a
rags-to riches transition” but rather for a stable life in the middle class
where they can focus on saving money for their future (King 611).

It
is still possible to go from “rags-to riches” in the United States, but as
stated before not everyone’s goal is to become rich. King states that “despite
the harshness of the Great Recession, a 2009 New York Times survey still found
that 72 percent of Americans still believed it was possible to start poor, work
hard, and become rich in America (Seelye, 2009),” and this is because Americans
work hard to get to where they are (King 612). The difference between the
American Dream and being able to make a living is the problem with economic
inequality. It is harder for the middle class to become rich because in some
cases, they have to pay the same amount of taxes that the rich do. This is a
downside because if the rich are paying the same amount of taxes as the middle
class, the middle class will therefore never get wealthier and the rich will
continue making more without having to pay more. King states that “the most
worrisome problem is inequality: that wealth is concentrated into the hands of
a rich minority,” and this is true because the wealthy pay as many taxes, or
sometimes less than the average middle-class citizen (King 615).

Immigration
in this country is mainly caused by the reputation of the American Dream.
Foreigners believe that once they get here they will easily be able to make
something of themselves. Being an immigrant in this country, Shayan Zadeh the
author of “Bring
More Immigrant Entrepreneurs,”
had trouble getting his American Dream started, but his was different from
King’s version of the American Dream. Shayan Zadeh writes about the economic
state of this country and how immigrants impact the economy with
entrepreneurship. Zadeh tells his story and how hard it was for him and others
to start a company when one comes from a foreign country. The article
highlights the impacts that the immigrant entrepreneurs have on the economy;
however Zadeh outlines the difficulties the immigrants face when they want to start
a company in the United States. Zadeh had difficulty starting his online
company, Zooks, because he was not permitted to start it if they were
immigrants without citizenships (Zadeh 624).

            Employment in America is a big issues when it comes to
foreigners. The american thought is believing that foreigners are taking their
jobs, but according to Zadeh, immigrants with companies can provide employment
for both immigrants, and the American people, therefore this creates movement
in the economy. Movement in the economy can result in the creation of “121,000
jobs per year over the next 10 years according to the Center for American
Progress,” (Zadeh 625). The creation of jobs by immigrants in the United States
would eliminate the American thought that immigrants are taking jobs from
Americans. With hard work and determination one can reach prosperity, according
to the meaning of the American Dream. The United States is the perfect country
for starting companies and entrepreneurs such as Zadeh. Zadeh’s main arguments
is that the American Dream can create both jobs for immigrants and natives of
this country. The United States capitalists’ economy allows for this nation to
be a changing or dynamic economy. The American Dream has created economic
success and it is the identity of the United States. People all over the world
want to come to the United States to be able to reach the American Dream.
