Rylee HoldinessReport 1Personal and Community Health10 January 2018The Main Health Issues of College Students A very known health issue of many college students is stress and anxiety. When a young adult attends college, he or she faces many changes. One has to recognize that these changes can affect one’s emotions. These emotions can interfere with one’s ability to function in everyday life. Stress and anxiety is a major health issue that almost every person, not just college students, is very aware of. A person getting the cold, flu, or sore throat is a very common thing. However, it is easier for a college student to get one of these because of the new environment and being surrounded by many people. It can be more difficult for a college student when he or she gets one of these because one is away from home. As a new student and being alone for the first time can be very difficult to take care of oneself and not infect others. When one is sick at home he or she can stay at home in one’s room and not infect other, but in college one has a roomate and then also has to go to the cafeteria to eat making it easier to come in contact with others. Another main health issue of college students is meningitis. Meningitis is the inflammation of protective membranes of the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms of meningitis in these students are nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, an altered mental state, sleepiness, and lack of appetite. Meningitis will always most likely be caused by bacteria or a virus. If one experiences a high fever, headaches, and a painful, stiff neck, he or she should go to the doctor as soon as possible. A huge health issue some college students face is excessive alcohol use. The people who drink, one should remember that excessive alcohol use can lead to a larger risk of many health problems. Underage drinking and binge drinking 5 or more drinks for men and 4 or more drinks for women in two hours of time will definitely lead to issues. Some less difficult outcomes are injuries, violence, crazy behaviors, and alcohol poisoning. Even though many college students already have some experience with alcohol, the widespread availability of alcohol, non-consistent enforcement of underage drinking laws, and seeing parents and family less, can intensify the problem. Many college students report having difficulty sleeping. One can find themselves in sleepiness and having low energy throughout the day. 25% of people in college have trouble sleeping. Half of students shared having trouble with sleepiness during a day. If a body does not get 8 hours of sleep a night, sleep debt can be a result. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EUx0YgGebQ Works Cited”Health Issues.” Student Health Services | Georgetown University, studenthealth.georgetown.edu/health-issues.
