Power transient. Oscillatory transients normally decay to zero

Power Quality is determined as a grid of power to provide clean and stable electrical power and acting as a perfect power supply that has a no noise form of sinusoidal waveform, and keep maintain in frequency and voltage tolerance. However, the deviation from ideal conditions usually happens because the quality of load imposes increased interruptions quickly. An entire change of electric loads nature is led by the information technology equipment and power electronics. These loads are the most important causers of power quality issues. All these loads cause disturbances in the voltage waveform by their non-linearity. (Anon, 2017). A poor power quality is causing problems for some business sectors and costs are rising because the range of interruptions increases and modern production equipment becomes additional sensitive to this disruption. Ironically, it is often the equipment itself that produces disturbances. The most two common power quality that is going to discuss are transients and waveform distortion. Transients are one types of power qualitydisturbance, which may be categorised as impulsive or
oscillatory. Impulsive transients are quick, the raise time from steady
state to the peak of the impulse is 5ns. Impulsive transients are fast and sudden
high, fast peak events that raise voltage or/and current levels from steady
state, in positively or negatively. Inductive load switching lightning, poor
grounding, and electrostatic discharge (ESD) are causing impulse transients.
(Ecdonline.com.au, 2017). ESD although it may not be dangerous for humans, but
can destroy sensitive electronic or computer systems. The loss of information
to physical damage of equipment is the consequences of a network subjected to
impulse transients range.

The second type
of transient is oscillatory transient, is a sudden change which happen in the steady-state condition of a
signal’s voltage and/or current, at both sign either positively and negatively,
and it is oscillating at the pure system frequency. The power signals swell and
then shrink very fast because of transient. Oscillatory transients normally
decay to zero in a cycle (a decaying oscillation), slower than impulsive
transients. These transients are caused by the capacitive loads or inductive loads.
They can be disorderly to electronic devices and overvoltage tripping in
variable speed drives (VSD) occurred due to the slow transient and causing a
rise in the DC link voltage. (My Tech Info, 2017).             Transient voltage surge suppressors are the most effective
for protecting against transients in a power system. Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor (TVSS) is the equipment designed to
protect electrical and electronic devices from voltage spikes and power surges   and response to sudden
overvoltage conditions. Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor redirects
the excess voltage and current from transient into
grounding wire and avoids it from passing through the electrical and electronic
equipment. At the same time, it is allowing the normal voltage to continue
along its way. Damaging in electrical and electronic equipment can cause by the
excess energy. TVSS responds to overvoltage
faster than other common overvoltage protection components MOV, Avalanche Diode, Gas
Discharge Tube. This causes the TVSS devices or components useful to
protect against damaging and fast voltage
spikes. The components in transient voltage surge suppressors are used to minimize
or limit high voltage such as MOV, Avalanche
Diode and Gas Discharge Tube

impedance path for conducting the current
to eliminate the excess voltage and it also absorbs and then diverts the excess
current to ground for protecting the effects of transient . It is also classified into two types as filter and transients diverter. Filter is a device that filters the
noise, which only allows the low frequency power current to flow through
unaffected. Next, transient divider is a device that presents very low
impedance path to ground, when voltage across the equipment is more than the stated
value, and then it will minimize the voltage that could be presented to the
sensitive equipment. (Leonics.com, 2017).
