It was just supposed to be a fun girls night out. She wasn’t supposed to get raped, or pregnant. Thankfully, she is able to get an abortion, as she should be, but what about the mother in a low income family who simply can’t afford to have another child, why is her right to a safe and legal abortion being threatened? In the court case of Roe v. Wade they declared abortion a right protected by the Fourteenth Amendment, but now that right is being threatened. All women have the right to get an abortion because the government can not make decisions about your body and everyone should be able to have equal access to safe and legal abortions.
The government does not have to power to make decisions about your body for you. In the court case of Roe v. Wade, Norma McCorvey filed a lawsuit against Henry Wade, the district attorney of Dallas County. Norma wanted to get an abortion, but Henry Wade had passed a law stating that abortions would only be allowed in life or death situations. On January 22, 1973 the Supreme Court ruled that a woman’s right to abortion is protected under the Fourteenth Amendment of the constitution (“Roe V. Wade”). The issue is a very controversial topic that is still in the Supreme Courts and Congress, but they should not have the ability to make life changing decisions about a woman’s body. Out of the 535 seats in congress, only 19.8% of the seats are held by women (“Congress”). Is it really fair for men to be making decisions about women’s bodies? The majority of the people making this decision will never be pregnant and faced with the choice between whether or not to get an abortion. They should not even have the power to make these decisions, Roe v. Wade gave women the right to choose, and to take that right away or to only allow certain people to be protected under that right would be unconstitutional.
All women should have equal access to safe and legal abortions. You cannot say that only certain peoples right to abortion are protected under the Fourteenth Amendment, the constitution applies to everyone. By only allowing rape and incest victims to have abortions, people are forgetting the devastating impact that unwanted pregnancies have on others. Unwanted pregnancies affects not only the mother, but the child as well. Only 50% of teen mothers graduate high school and less than 2% will have a college degree by age thirty (“11 Facts”). This will have overwhelming effects on the child. Mothers will not have the education necessary to get a well paying job to support their child and their family. This also can have many impacts of families who already have children. By denying woman who already have children the right to abortion, you are destroying that child’s ability to have a future. If the family is a low income family, then you are decreasing the amount of money that the parents can spend on their children because they now have another child to provide for and another mouth to feed. The money that the first child had to go to college, if they had any money to go to college, will be decreased because now they have another child to think about. People need to understand that unwanted pregnancies have harsh impacts on the family as a whole, not just the mother.
People who are pro-life will say that abortion should be illegal. They believe that only victims of rape and incest should have access to abortion and that there are many ways to prevent unwanted pregnancies such as abstinence. They would also say that you can put the child up for adoption. However the solution to this issue is not as simple as not having sex until marriage or putting the child up for adoption. People who cannot support the child would still have to support it while it is in the womb. Passing anti-abortion laws will not put an end to abortions. People will go back to having dangerous and illegal abortions. Pro-choice is not pro-abortion. Pro-choice is knowing that women should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies.
This is not simply about abortion, it is part of a larger picture about women’s rights being threatened. Pro-choice is about giving women the right to make choices about their bodies instead of the government making them for them. As Margaret Sanger, the founder of planned parenthood said,  “No woman can call herself free who does not own and control her body(Sanger).”
