Over contract is the understanding from both parties,

Over the past 50 years, the meaning
of work has changed significantly with companies shifting the focus to treating
their employees and customers better and thus improve efficiency, profitability,
and the lives of their employees. There are many factors that have contributed
to this, the main ones being the psychological contract, job enrichment,
technology, and self-managed teams.

The psychological contract between employees and their employers 50
years ago was very different from what it is today. A psychological contract is
the understanding from both parties, employee and company, that they give and
receive equal value from each other. Workers would retire at age 65 and be
given a token that signified an entire lifetime working at the same
organization. Nowadays, if an employee thinks they deserve more or does not
like the way they are being treated they can simply find a company that will
give them more or treat them better. There is practically no such thing as
company loyalty anymore. This can be partially credited to downsizing. In the
1980s and 90s, many companies went through a downsizing trend. Ever since then,
employees have learned to use the experience gained at a company to get a
better position elsewhere. That is how the psychological contract has
contributed to the new meaning of work.

Job enrichment has contributed greatly to the evolving meaning of work
over the past 50 years. Job enrichment helps the employee feel that they are
accomplishing something significant within the company by providing challenging
and engaging opportunities. It empowers employees to make decisions and take
responsibility for their work. This has been shown to vastly increase job
satisfaction which employers have realized has a very high correlation to job
performance. When employees are happy at their job, they will perform better.
Although this seems obvious, 50 years ago it did not seem that companies knew
this. Working conditions overall, in the form of job enrichment, have improved
greatly over the last 50 years, contributing to the new meaning of work.

Technology and self-managed teams have all contributed a great deal to
the new meaning of work. Technology has advanced exponentially over the last 50
years. The introduction of computers and the internet make it easier than ever
to advertise products and communicate with people all over the world. Traditionally,
companies have treated employees as unskilled and expendable. Over the past 50
years however, the focus has been shifted to treat employees with respect and
give them more and more responsibility. The implementation of self-managed
teams into many companies gives employees the freedom to create their own
schedule with the team’s success being measured by results rather than the amount
of time they worked. This team approach increases creativity, motivation, and
empowers employees to reach their full potential. Overall, technology and
self-managed teams have greatly improved work over the past 50 years.

The meaning of work has evolved greatly over the past 50 years. Although
many factors have contributed to this, there are a few that are more
significant: the psychological contract, job enrichment, technology, and
self-managed teams. Employees can take the experience they gain at one company
to another company for a better position, feel accomplished and challenged with
job enrichment, be more efficient and communicate with anyone in the world with
technology, and be evaluated based on their team’s success rather than the
hours they work. The meaning of work has changed drastically over the past 50
years, this begs the question: how will it change in the next 50 years?
