schools should maintain requiring med students to enroll in art classes. In the
text, Dr. Michael Flanagan advocates that because of medical student’s
enrollment in impressionist art classes, it helps students communicate
effectively and gain insight on critical subjects. Through this, not only does
it help students develop effective communication/ and insight, it even gives
students a sense of empathy which is an essential trait in the medical field.
Lesser uses ethos, by mentioning Dr. Taylor of Columbia University, and Dr.
Schwartz outlook on medical student’s enrollment in art classes. It supports
Flanagan’s indication on how art classes is effective and needed for all
medical students. Briefly, in the text expresses medical students who do enroll
in art/ or humanity classes will help students gain communication and
empathetic skills for real world scenarios.

technological and liberal arts could help the growth of any company instead of
focusing on “feeds and speed”. In the article, it begins by explaining the
cause of why technology alone shouldn’t be the focus in a project or company.
CEO, Steve Jobs explains on how his first Apple investment was in danger of
failing. Shortly, after the iPad 2 was introduced, Jobs adapts to the strategy
on how “Technology married with liberal arts, married with humanities, that
yields us the results that make our heart sing”. Jobs quotation interprets that
lack of communication skills may be attributed to the lack of importance given
to disciplines in technological advances. Humanities or liberal arts, can
prepare engineers or entrepreneur to fulfill cultural and public responsibly. In
the text, John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Pixar, quotes “Technology
inspires art, and art challenges the technology”. Lasseter’s quote explains
that both technological advances and art involves ideas and skills that is
necessary for innovation and creativity. Author, Lehrer uses both Jobs and
Lasseter to emphasize the importance of human components in the technological
field. Collaboration of both computer scientist and artist will certainly bring
more innovative and creativity which is essential for those who buy products,
or even watching a film. Lehrer wants his audience to understand that focusing
on humanistic components and not just product in anything you do will create a
positive effect on whoever your trying to reach.

the article “Why I Teach Plato to Plumbers”, points out the importance of
liberal arts education, specifically humanities. Author, Samuelson states “Traditionally,
the liberal arts have been the privilege of an upper class”, which he is trying
to convey that we reside in a world only focuses on those who are with wealthy
and given the best education of those of high rank. Samuelson expresses
throughout the passage that our society, which is made of free individuals
should all have access to a versatile liberal arts education whether rich, or
poor. Samuelson even argues that the problem just isn’t with humanities but
liberal arts in general which includes math, economics, and science as well. In
addition, Samuelson indicates the main message of the passage by stating “First,
it befits… horizon of values”, which Samuelson concludes that he believes
liberal arts will eventually lose it essential value and essence. Even in our
society which is based on both advancements in our economy and technology,
Samuelson points out that as a nation we should still strive to be active individuals
and participate in our global society.

the article “Falling Short? College Learning and Career Success” uses logos, or
factual evidence to indicate, employers want graduates who have gained a versatile
range of knowledge or skills that can be applied to a range of fields or positions
in that particular career department. Through the employer student survey, the
AACU expresses the essential need for liberal arts education which will create
a positive outcome for the student in the long run as well in present time. By
the surveys, it shows both current and graduate college students success in
both broad learning and career skills and how employers indicate the induvial
career caliber. Too add on, the purpose of the survey is primarily to understand
how the student distinguish what learning outcomes are mainly important to
fulfill a long-term career in today’s economy. As the survey progress, both
employers and students find common ground on what are the most important
outcome of collegiate learning. The outcomes which are suggested is prioritizing
versatile liberal learning for all college students, endorsing broad learning,
and students engaging in applied learning which is all essential in excelling
in any career. To conclude, the survey shows that students who are successfully
skilled in communication skills, ethical decision making, critical thinking,
team skills, and ability to apply knowledge in real world situation will not
only cause them to excel in their career but also learning how to become

the article “The Humanities and the Social Sciences: Contrasting Approaches”, contrast
the views of both social sciences and humanities. In the article, it emphasizes
that social sciences contrast from humanities due to scientific paradigm. While
on the other hand, humanities contrast from social sciences through
interpretive methodologies. The article also explains how both social sciences
and humanities focus on human aspects such as economics, psychology, politics,
and laws. The article uses the objectives of humanities professors to reflect
on the sentimental purpose on why it’s important to know the difference between
the two, and how they apply to one’s life. The writer conveys that humanities
creates a heritage of questioning in which makes us humans, but on the other
hand there is a scientific approach to social sciences that links a study
between humanistic behaviors and natural science. Too add on, the passage
mainly focuses on contrasting the approach of both humanities and social
science, which humanities involves a more critical approach while social
sciences deal with more scientific aspects.
