Franco 1Carmen FrancoMrs. Whorton English IV – Period 212 January 2018Dental Assistant     As I look at my future in the next five years I see myself working at a Dentist office as a Dental Assistant. I like working with people and this job requires interacting with many people everyday. A Dental Assistant is someone that works with a Dentist and helps with many different types of procedures. Most importantly their job includes helping the patients be calm and comfortable, and get everything ready for the Dentist when they get there.  As a Dental Assistant they are required to have some schooling and have to be able to work well with others and interact well with the patients.     Once a patient goes into a dentist office the Dental Assistant takes care of the patient, knowing that some of the patients may be scared or not comfortable, they work with them to keep them in a comfortable state. According to Shelly Field in her article “Dental Assistant”, for Dental Assistants who work in patient care, their duties begin before the patient arrives at the dentist’s office. The Dental Assistant will obtain the correct dental records, prepare the tray setups for dental procedures, and sterilize and disinfect the instruments and equipment.(Field) They also have many other job, including helping the dentist examine and treat patients and completing laboratory and office work. They assist the dentist by preparing patients for dental                                             Franco 2exams, handing the dentist the proper instruments, taking and processing X-rays, preparing materials for making impressions and restorations, and instructing patients in oral health care. (“Dental assistants perform a variety of duties in the dental office”)     The salary of Dental Assistants depend on many different factors, earnings for Dental Assistants can range from approximately $18,000 to $32,000 or more depending on a number of variables, including the qualifications, experience, education, and responsibilities of the individual as well as the geographic location.(Field) Although wages for assistants have not kept up with inflation, salaries naturally increase with experience. Working for a specialist, such as a pediatric dentist or orthodontist, often results in higher pay. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook, dental assistants working full time earned a median salary of $27,248 in 2002. (“The boy is screaming, his face red from the effort and streaked with tears”.)    Dental Assistants can work in many different offices and environments which includes, practices with only one dentist, group practices, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, public health dentistry, including settings such as schools and clinics which focus on the prevention of dental problems within entire communities, hospital dental clinics, dental school clinics, vocational schools, technical institutes, community colleges dental schools and universities.(“Dental assistants greatly increase the efficiency”)  Dental assistants held about 332,000 jobs in 2016.
