Henry returns in time for the great retreat from the Austrians and Germans, the Italian forces become disordered and chaotic.
To escape the only way out is to shoot an engineer sergeant under his command to leave the war behind. Following that he dives into the river to escape. Henry finds Catherine in Stresa. With the help of the Italian bartender, they escape to Switzerland in a small boat and try to forget the war. All is well until Catherine goes into labor and things decline and go terribly wrong…….
